Working From Home With A Dachshund

Working from home has become the norm for many of us over recent years, with limited full-time return to the office in the post-pandemic world meaning that a much larger number of us are now either operating a hybrid work schedule (part in office, part working from home) or full time working from home. This means that for those of us that are dog owners, and in particular those of us that own dachshunds, get to experience both the joy and sometimes challenges that come with working from home when you own a dachshund! This was something I particularly struggled to adjust to during the pandemic, but quickly had to find ways to work around having our boy at home with me all of the time.

In this post, we will explore how to make the most of working from home with your dachshund, striking a balance between productivity and enjoying the additional time to spend with your sausage dog.

Creating a Dog-Friendly Workspace

First things first, setting up a dog-friendly workspace is crucial. Designate an area in your home where your dachshund can feel comfortable and secure while still being in proximity to you. Provide a cosy bed, some toys, and a water bowl within their reach, so that they have everything they need to keep them happy and stimulated for a few hours, and are therefore less likely to be destructive in the house or to disturb you while you work.

Establishing a Routine

Dachshunds thrive on routine, and establishing a regular daily schedule will benefit both you and your sausage dog. Plan regular mealtimes, walks, and play breaks throughout the day. This not only provides structure but also ensures your dachshund receives the mental and physical stimulation they need, preventing them from becoming restless and interrupting your work.

Where possible (if it’s not raining, as my boy absolutely refuses to walk in the rain) I always like to start the day with a short walk, as this often helps my dachshund to settle down for a nap on our return, allowing me to get an hour or two of focused work completed before he needs my attention again.

Taking Breaks Together

One of the joys of working from home with a dachshund is the ability to take breaks and enjoy quality time together. Use these breaks to go on short walks or engage in interactive play sessions can help to bring energy to your work day, but also help you foster a strong bond with your sausage dog. The real benefit I have found from working at home with my dachshund is that we have a much better relationship and bond as a result of getting to spend more time together, as when I previously worked five days a week in an office, it was much more difficult to factor in that quality time or even get the chance to walk him myself during the week.

Minimising Distractions

Let's face it – dachshunds have unique and sometimes mischievous personalities, and their antics can sometimes be disruptive, especially when you are very busy at work. Minimise distractions by providing your dachshund with engaging toys, such as puzzle treat dispensers or chew toys, to keep them occupied during your work hours. I have previously written a post on treats for your dachshund covering some of my dachshund’s favourite treats, many of which are absolute staples in our household while i’m working from home - especially the chews such as the Yakers or dental chews - as these keep him busy while I’m trying to concentrate.

Additionally, consider using baby gates or closing doors to create boundaries and limit access to areas that could lead to potential distractions. If I have a particularly important virtual meeting to attend, for example, I will close the doors downstairs (where my dachshund has his personal space) to ensure there is less chance of being disturbed by any barking or other noise. If it’s not possible to separate your dachshund from your workspace while on virtual meetings and calls, it’s a good idea to try to maintain professionalism by informing participants ahead of time and consider muting your microphone when not speaking to minimise background noise.

Setting Clear Boundaries

To maintain productivity while working from home, it's also essential to set clear boundaries with your dachshund. Establish rules regarding their access to your workspace and teach them to respect your designated work area. Reward them for good behaviour and reinforce the concept of "off-limits" areas. With consistent training and positive reinforcement, your dachshund will learn to understand and respect your workspace boundaries.

Working from home with a dachshund brings great companionship but is not without some challenges. By creating a dog-friendly workspace, establishing a routine, taking breaks together, minimising distractions, setting clear boundaries, and maintaining virtual meeting etiquette, you can strike a balance between productivity and enjoying spending more time with your dachshund.
